The truth is, the majority of Synapse members didn’t join Synapse with only fitness goals in mind. Simply stated, we wanted to become happier.
When I first started CrossFit, yes, I was overweight. But I was also pretty unhappy, and my weight gain was a symptom of that. I know lots of you have experienced the same thing- maybe you went through a bad breakup or divorce, maybe you got fired, maybe you fell upon a hard time in your life financially, mentally, or spiritually. Synapse has been transformative for a lot of us, and I personally believe it is because of intrinsic parts of our gym that can’t be found other places. The country of Bhutan made a decision a few years ago to emphasize gross national happiness over gross national product. That means that they make policy for their country that may not be economically favorable, but will potentially increase the happiness of their people. On a much smaller scale, I believe that is what we try and implement at Synapse. We, meaning the entire community, want you, meaning everyone else in the community, to be happy. But the question remains- what makes us happy? Not fashion, not a new car, no product you could buy will give you anything but a fleeting moment of happiness. Instead, studies have shown that a cooperative community, physical activity, and practicing compassion are the keys to satisfaction and contentment. So it makes sense that Synapse could help induce these ideals. Synapse is a stripped gym. On purpose. Free of Reebok banners, products, business degrees, and towel service. All that exists are great workouts, GREAT people, and an opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself. I’ve seen more compassion and acts of cooperation in that place than I’ve seen in my whole life. Just the other day, Bonnie decided to clean the insides of our rowers for us. Jimmy stays after class on a regular basis to help rehab different aches and pains for people. Alfie volunteers to clean the gym on top of his full time stressful job and caring for his family. Shannon brings us vegetables from his boss’s garden. I even saw Monica, a brand new member, stop her workout and tend to another member’s child that needed help. We will help you move should you need it. We’ve given dramatic discounts when people go through job struggles. I’m pretty sure a couple people have slept at the gym. These things might seem simple, but they contribute to the larger goal- a cooperative, noncompetitive community full of people that you can rely on and will rely on you. This creates an environment that allows you to belong to something bigger than yourself, which in turn, allows you a greater sense of happiness. At least it does for me. Sometimes I get caught up in seeing the success of other gyms, whether it’s success in competition, or success in business, and I start to lose my grounding. I think to myself, panicking, “I want to be like THAT gym, offer more, WIN more, bring in more people, more trainers, more workshops, sell more products, and be the BEST GYM.” But there’s something HUGE missing in that thought process. That’s not what we value- this constant need fore MORE- more product, more money, more members, more medals, more gear doesn’t PROVE anything, about yourself or your gym. Relax, and remember what you value. Relax, and realize it’s right in front of you. The reason we are NEVER viewed as a “customer service-y” gym, or the reason Bonnie or Marie or any of our other competitors don’t get preferential treatment, or why we don’t sound like a commercial on the phone is because our goal is not to be society’s model of “the best gym.” Our goal is to provide a working community where someone can experience physical flow on a daily basis, be free of societal pressures, and get to know others in a positive environment. Hopefully this helps you shed whatever toxins you have- mental, physical, or influenced by others. Hopefully this encourages you to find what you value and find a greater sense of happiness. We value THAT over profit, over product sales, over winning competitions, over your PRs, over your income, over everything. We’re not the “best” gym. But for me, we’re the right one. Give to the community. Walk in each day knowing that you are capable of changing someone’s day, elevating the compassionate, cooperative spirit of the gym, and being a part of something bigger than yourself. The workout’s awesome, but it’s a small part of the Synapse experience. 3 Position Clean + Jerk
