Many firefighters, police officers and military personnel use CrossFit to increase endurance, strength, and work capacity in their fields. Talk about functional fitness! We have always loved training and getting to know these members of our community that are constantly giving back in the most selfless way. We thought it was time to consistently offer a class to the PFOBs (Police, Fire, and Other Badasses), and it will officially begin this Saturday at NoHo at 8am.

A lot of times when we do very difficult WODs or lifts that require us to muster all of our strength, guts, and mental and physical capabilities, we have to go to a darker or deeper place. This place is different for all of us, whether we find it by getting angry, simply demanding more of ourselves, questioning ourselves, or lighting that inner fire, we all have a way.
I used to think that in order to be great at CrossFit, you must have gone through experiences or situations in life that required you to muster this same amount of focus, drive, passion, or resiliency. Some people say that great actors are great because they have emotional depth from emotional experiences that they can bring to the stage or screen; similarly, I believed that in order to push through the treacherousness of our workouts, you had to have some sort of experience pushing through treacherousness in life. This may be true, but personally, I believe there's an alternative way of looking at this. The goal is not to simply succeed at CrossFit. The goal is to succeed in your life. Your life doesn't need to help you be better at CrossFit, but CrossFit can certainly allow you to be better at life. I believe that the countless deadlift/wallball workouts I have done in my life that have made me cry have prepared me to be more resilient when I believe I am broken. I believe that the countless lifts I haven't made in competition have prepared me to understand, appreciate, and bounce back from failure. I believe that the Friday Massacres I have trudged through have prepared me for the battle of business I face now. When it comes down to the things that matter most, those things probably do not end up being CrossFit. But I guarantee that CrossFit has influenced those things. For me, what matters is the business. It's the community. It's these two gyms that stole my heart the minute I set foot inside them the first time. For you, maybe your kids, your own business, your wife, etc. At some point in your life, you will go through failure or defeat or encounter a debilitating setback in the area of your life that matters the most to you. And when that happens, and you struggle, and you feel broken, and you uncomfortably feel your way through this adversity, I hope you also remember your CrossFit journey. I hope you remember that you didn't start where you are now. That you worked on that snatch for hours and hours and months and months, and finally you had a breakthrough. I hope you remember the countless massacres that defeated you until one day you bested one. I hope you remember that backsquat PR that was a year long in the making. Don't run away from the struggle at CrossFit - it's better to learn the struggle inside these walls than outside them. And when you DO unfortunately happen to meet obstacles outside these walls, not only will you be mentally and physically equipped to handle them, but you'll have a whole lot of people willing to face the struggle with you. One of the coolest parts about CrossFit is that you can easily measure your progress and improvements. A WOD that took you 15 minutes to complete as a beginner may take you 10 minutes as a more advanced student. It's measurable, and that not only feels great, but is a fantastic tool for us as your coaches.
Typically in the CrossFit world, gyms use specific "benchmark" workouts to test fitness. They'll repeat these workouts every so often to test the progress of their members. Often times these workouts are named after OG CrossFit women, or legends in the CrossFit world. For example, walk into any CrossFit gym in the country, and they'll be able to tell you how fast they can perform the workout "Fran." At Synapse, however, we do things a little differently. We still want to test your fitness, but some of the more typical CrossFit workouts don't serve the purpose that we're looking for in our programming. So, we have created our own benchmark workouts after Original Synapsters (OS's). These are men and women who have been with us for what seems like FOREVER. They were all there in our first location (what is now the massage parlor in Tarzana), where there was little paint on the walls, words of the day, and sometimes we all canceled class to go ate bacon at whole foods. Times have changed, but there are a lot of OS's that still WOD hard on a daily basis with us. We have immortalized them forever by dedicating our benchmarks to our incredibly dedicated Original Synapsters. This week, you will see 2 OS's, on Tuesday and Thursday, entitled "Hayes" and "Nancy" after Dan Hayes (6am Tarzana) and Nancy Aldrich (9am Tarzana). Next week you will see "Jackson" and "Wild Turkey" on Monday and Wednesday. There will be 4 weight options for the workout listed on the board. Your goal is to eventually be able to do the workout at the first weight, but that may not be possible yet. No worries! This gives you a goal to work towards. Keep track of your times and weights, as we will be repeating these workouts 2 months from now. While the typical day at Synapse is a "training day," these are "testing days," and a different attitude is required. While there are strict standards for the movements in these workouts, feel free to pull out all the stops and really go for these WODs. Remember you are only competing with yourself, and that competition should end once the WOD does! Have fun with this- these are some really spectacular WODs that we designed to allow you thrive. GO FOR IT! ALLOW yourself to compete and push yourself a little further than you thought possible. Amazing things are about to happen this week! Good Luck on Hayes and Nancy, Synapsters! |
