In case you haven’t heard, there’s a big debate going on right now about Prop 37, which proposes that all foods with GMOs be labeled. This has brought a lot of attention to the HUGE list of foods that contain GMOs, even some “organic” foods at Whole Foods that I buy on a consistent basis. This brought on a HUGE question:
Is it possible, in this nutritional climate, to live completely GMO-free, chemical-free, and grain-free? And, is there a significant benefit in doing so? Why don’t we try it and find out? So, I’ve decided that for 30 days I will be completely free. This means no hormones, no pesticides, no GMOs, no grain-fed animals, nothing that has been processed or packaged, no preservatives or natural flavors. I will only purchase organic, non-GMO foods from farmers markets, local farms and butchers, and trustworthy foods from Whole Foods/Sprouts. I will prepare all my food in safe, healthy ways. I will vow to LEARN as much as I can about what's going in my body and about the nutritional climate around me. Anyone want to do it too? This means there will have to be an emphasis on cooking. Knowing everything that goes in my body. Enjoying slow cooking. If you’re with me, I foresee fun dinners together focused on real food and conversation rather than convenience, learning to cook more, trying new and different ingredients, using seasonal specialties, and working through frustrations together as we truly find out the issues with what we’re eating and the issues with food sold in this country. I plan on starting Monday, October 15th so that I have about 2 weeks to plan, research, ask questions, and well, budget. Also, it will end before Thanksgiving and I plan on eating pie. If you’re in this with me, keep in mind that I am on a strict budget and will not be enjoying fancy shmancy anything. I will document my journey, research, and meals on “Suppertime with Synapse” so you can see what I eat, the questions I ask, the resources I use, the information I uncover, etc. This isn’t a diet. This isn’t a way to lose weight. This is a quest to tell Monsanto to go screw itself. To exist purely on actual nutrients, no waste. To strip away the crap we’ve been told is “healthy” to put in our bodies that may not actually be healthy. I want to eat REAL food and see how it feels. Any takers? Now that we got those pesky overhead squats out of the way(sorry Kelly).
